Question:

“I think I heard Martin say that knowing where the feet are and feeling the feet is less important than being in rhythm of the horse. Is it not important to first be able to feel where the feet are?” ~ via message Jodi

Answer from Martin:

Jodi,

What is creating the rhythm of the horse? Is it the feet, or the hip and shoulders lifting the feet, or the head and neck swinging that unloads the shoulders and hip?
As I said before, I couldn’t tell you which foot I was feeling until I started doing clinics and a person would ask me, then I had to study before I could explain exactly which foot I was feeling. I did not know most of the time. But what I did know is I was feeling something, and which something I needed to feel before I could get what I wanted, and what to do, or not do, to help shape up that something.

It’s like most of my mentors could show me what I wanted to see, but they couldn’t tell me what I needed to hear, or what I needed to feel. It’s not math, it’s not phonics, it’s not like most anything we learned in school. In theory it may be science, but unlike other science we would have learned in school.

Practical application can only be learned by feel, and you need the experience to know whether what you’re feeling is going to turn out positive or negative. I’ve learned how to put people in situations that increase their probability of finding a certain feel, and detour them if they are going the wrong direction, but it’s like directing someone that’s scratching your back exactly where you’re itch is. You can obviously feel it, but they won’t know until they get to where you are directing them to.

Thank you for your question.
