Safety and efficiency are high on his priority list along with developing a confident and willing horse in the process. He studies people and their relationships with their horses and puts it together with his experience from working with livestock to come up with a confidence-building agenda to prepare the horse and the person for whatever their needs are. He borrows whatever he can from whomever he can without prejudices of discipline or breed, as long as it follows his principles and works for the horse.
  • Martin Black’s family has been raising livestock on the same lands in Owyhee County in Idaho for over 150 years. The desire to maintain and preserve tradition runs deep within Martin. The “Classic Rodea Style Ranch Roping” DVD, the first of its kind, covering Great Basin style roping stirred up a lot of curiosity for the “real deal” and the questions started pouring in. This DVD, shot on the historic Alvord Ranch with the beautiful Steen mountains in the background, addresses the questions raised by the first DVD. Pull up a chair and join in as three of the top Great Basin ropers, John Schutte, Wade Black, and Martin, share their knowledge and humor with you in a relaxed, unrehearsed atmosphere. Martin’s library of old family photos and home movies , the knowledge and humor of three of the top Great Basin ropers along with exclusive music from Pedro Marquez makes this both educational and entertaining. You will enjoy several hours of detailed explanation in roping, horsemanship, stockmanship and much more. Martin’s unique insight and perspective will benefit both the experienced ropers and beginners alike. These DVD’s can be studied individually but as a set, they are much more comprehensive.
  • Martin Black's family has maintained the ranching tradition on the same ranch since 1865. His great grandfather grew up with the horsemanship and roping of the vaqueros that brought their large herds of cattle to the Great Basin in the 1870s. For several generations, the style, principles and ethics have been handed down. Martin would like to share some insight to the culture and traditions that he has lived and hopes to preserve and pass it on for others to enjoy. This DVD showcases everyday life on a real working ranch set at the base of the beautiful Steens mountains in southeastern Oregon on the historic Alvord Ranch. Martin and Frank Dominguez show examples and explain the details of the stockmanship, horsemanship, team-work and dedication of traditional ranch-roping while accomplishing the job of summer branding.
  • A great supplement two his previously released roping DVDs. In this DVD Martin puts a lot of emphasis on safety and efficiency. He shares some things in this video that will help develop correct muscle memory to stay safe and develop good roping fundamentals. Martin demonstrates some procedures that can help the more experienced roper or beginner alike to become a more versatile roper such as: loop building, rope handling, developing a good swing, basic deliveries, and tips for running rope and dallying. • In this latest DVD offering of vintage footage, Tom directs Bryan Neubert in the starting of two young horses at one of his clinics. Tom offers suggestions for Bryan and comments on what he sees is taking place. He mentions several times that the learning that will take place for people will be when they go home and spend time with their own horses; the clinic is an opportunity to be exposed to some new ideas. We hope that this footage will offer you some exposure to new ideas and that you can incorporate into your approach to horses a part of Tom’s unique ability to see what was taking place within horses and people together with some of his patience and humor. Next Harry Whitney rides a horse through obstacles: tires on the ground and a bridge. This will expose you to a way to approach obstacles and an idea of the learning that can take place when approaching something new. The DVD closes with a conversation between Tom and Harry about “approaches.”  Listen and think about the situations they are visiting about. You will find some great gems in their exchanges. Enjoy this opportunity to spend some time with Tom. We are sure this exposure to his way of teaching and helping people and horses will give you some good ideas to blend into your life. Viewer Note: There are moments of sound and video that are less than perfect. For true students of horsemanship those moments can hardly distract from the learning taking place with the horses and students. Please enjoy these teachable moments with Tom.
